Day of Prayer this Saturday (11/29)

Kendall Baptist Church in Temple Hills, MD, is having a day of prayer this Saturday based upon the format of Broken Before the Throne. Information follows:

Where: 3000 Branch Avenue, Temple Hills, MD 20748
Date: Saturday 11/29
Time: Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.
Sessions:
First session 9-12:30; Second session: 1:30-5:30. Lunch is not provided.

During the sessions there will be praise and worship in song, plus teaching/preaching, but much of the time (approx. 2/3) will be allotted to prayer. Pastor Lamont Jones felt that God wanted him to do this now, and he anticipates that there will be more of these to come.

Scotland Revival Conference

The Scotland Revival Conference starts tomorrow and continues through Thursday. Like the Atlanta Conference, this will be webcast. Two familiar faces will be there: Al Whittinghill and John MacGregor.

REVIVAL CONFERENCE 2008 GREENOCK, SCOTLAND LIVE WEBCAST!

I am currently in Greenock, Scotland with the Revival Conference moderators: Don Courville and Gareth Evans. God has opened up locally in the area the town hall facility which seats 1200 people and the spire of the hall can be seen anywhere in the town. The break out sessions will be in the oldest church in the city across the road, dating back from the 1800's. Church attendence in Scotland is almost down to 2-5% amongst evangelicals and sadly most of the youth are athiest and agnostic. It is a very dismal situation when looked at by men's eyes but from God's perspective there is great hope and He desires to send a revival that will redeem men for heaven!

Let's fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

We hope to set up a time SOON for prayer. Our praying earlier was not only for the week in October. We will continue, as said a few posts back.

We're Continuing

This will be such good news for many. Dan Biser said in our last session yesterday that we will continue on with Broken Before the Throne. I know that continuing this year was not because we had a good time last year and wanted to do it again. He felt that God wanted him to do it. Evidently all three of the speakers who traveled in said there's nothing in the country with this format.

Here's a wild thing. We began meeting for prayer only 9-10 weeks ago. Looking back at notes, God answered our prayers, many of our prayers, and oh so quickly. We will go and seek you, Lord, and pray fervently for Your will to be done in the upcoming year.

There are no details, of course. But as we find them out, we'll let you know!

Fearing God

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, And rescues them.

Some of us are beginning to really fear God. I am one of those people. He is the Lord.

(Conference?)

Even though we called it a "conference" for publicity purposes, most of us struggle to give it a single definition. The truth is, we've never really experienced anything like this, at least those I've talked to. We all love it, I'll tell you that.

My words don't do it justice, and what I wrote on the last post sounds insufficient. I'll say the following about the last few days. John Franklin is incredibly insightful, John McGregor is wonderfully loving, Dan Biser is an awesome shepherd, Sammy Tippet is highly practical, and Aaron Miller conveyed God's glory like no other "everyday" pastor I've ever seen.

There is something else, however, which I cannot help but behold. Not sure how to explain it, but I'll try this. There has been much humility, gentleness, and patience, and many were showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. It's like we're one (conference?), in one Spirit, called in one hope, with one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. This is bizarre.

Now we're all gifted in various ways, and as some of us rallied around one special situation, the difference was both visible and beneficial. It seems as if we've been given an "equipping" for the work of service, to the building up of us all. Just in myself, I feel incredibly equipped after this week.

I heard a lot people speaking the truth in love, and there was overall growth in all aspects into Him who is the head, you know, Christ. It's like we're some sort of (conference?), from whom everyone was being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causing the growth of the (conference?) for the building up of itself in love.

This week's topic? Prayer. God wants us to pray without ceasing. He wants us to lose our self-life and cherish His abiding presence. But whatever you call it, you almost get the impression that the gates of hell couldn't prevail against it. Now that's something else.

Normally, I wouldn't use a silly emoticon for the title of any blog, but that's the best I can do. My words cannot express what's on my mind right now. Much of it, of course, is personal. All I can say is, "well, God's in town again".

This year is different from last year. For one, it's easier to get closer to the speakers, and it's easier to speak to others in general. For those of us who were here last year, God really has done something that has continued on. (That's not to say that those who could not return have not experienced the same!) It wasn't some event where we got excited, bought a book, and forgot about it. Our lives were changed by what we experienced and saw, and we were compelled to return.

We get to listen to Dan Biser more, and that's no let down at all. In fact, I'm thrilled to hear an everyday pastor who thinks this way. It is highly relevant to us regular sheep. The problem really is quite bad in the church. Nobody wants to pray, nobody wants to speak with the Heavenly Father. Few people see a problem with that.

Today, we heard John McGregor speak on the need for corporate prayer. He gave a number of wonderful testimonies; it was a joy listening to him. I thought it already, but I definitely know it now: God is causing people to want to pray again, and He insists that we gather for prayer. I can't convey all the way I'd like, so I won't try. Dan Biser spoke to us, also, on the need to "take time to be holy". Do we KNOW the sin which so easily besets us? Tonight, we have John Franklin.

Freezer-Refrigerator

I just had to put this saying somewhere. It's really very simple: if you come to a prayer conference, there should be prayer. Freezer----Refrigerator.

What Needs to Die?

This is just one person's take on last night with John McGregor. He took us to the entire chapter of Isaiah 6. He pointed out that the first 5 chapters are "woe is you, woe is you" and then we get to chapter 6, and it is "woe is me...I am a man of unclean lips". The first thing he pointed out that needed to be broken was Isaiah's dependence upon man.

There it is, right out of the starting gate. Day one, God brings to us our dependence upon man. Mr. McGregor took us to 2 Chr 26, which details how King Uzziah used to seek the Lord and the Lord prospered him. But we see Uzziah become famous and strong. In strength he apparently stopped seeking God.

He pointed out what happens in North America. A church experiences some level of "success" and people go and ask, "What are you doing?" That is seeking man, not God.

He spoke of a man who used to follow AW Tozer around here and there. One day, Tozer stopped at a coke machine and the other man asked himself if a holy man would be drinking Coca-Cola.

Another thing that was broken with Isaiah was his concept of God. He saw how God was high and lifted up. Mr. McGregor spoke to us weaving in his personal story, how he got saved, and how he needed a higher concept of God. (A sort of second trip to the cross.) There was something in him that needed to die, and he posed the question to us: what is it in us that needs to die before we see God more clearly as He is in heaven?

We continued on in the rest of Isaiah 6. I cannot describe sufficiently all of this, so I probably ought not try. Here were some key thoughts/questions throughout the rest of the session:

• Phil 2:11-13, It's GOD who works IN you. How much to you desire personal holiness? If you don't know what God is doing in your life today, it's a good day to be broken before the throne.
  
• Seek no personal glory. There are no names before the throne, only broken people.
  
• People today, we hear the word but there is no change.
  
• The 10th of the remnant. Nor worried about numbers or the opinions of others. It's costly to be the remnant, but it's the place that God does the work.

I also can't help but wonder if God isn't asking us if we truly believe the things He's taught us over the past year.

What to Expect

We met on Tuesday for prayer at Westview, and BBtT organizer Dan Biser was with us. One thing he asked was, what are you expecting from this year? Truly, we aren't sure, because last year God Himself met us, and it's hard to put an easy, single expectation upon what might happen this year. We know one thing--we expect God.

But one person raised a caution, hoping people won't leave disappointed if they don't immediately see something with their eyes. That's a good caution, even for myself (Tracy). It was interesting how God worked with what I saw last November. He started many things in me and in others at that point, that has continued over the following year.

How about these: God's name is holy and God's people are profaning it...God's people should be invisible...the idea of gathering...the church is powerless, desecrated, and in need of a reformation...we must return to God...dying to self, not loving our lives...unity among the body (in the Spirit)...tears...too strong in ourselves not strong in God...and more.

It should be frightening that people who are seeking God are finding precisely the same things. This is going on all over the country, I am told. It makes me scared a bit.

Today, we'll start off with prayer from 1-4 p.m. We know one thing, we are to worship God, no matter what happens. We take pleasure in His presence, even if we see nothing with our eyes.

Dan Biser mentioned on Tuesday night that the sessions will be streamed over the web. It will be the speakers and not the times of prayer. He hooked up with Greg Gordon from Sermon Index. Those at Sermon Index are our like-minded brethren who are also having a conference the week after ours.

Dan said that it should be available from the main web site for Broken Before the Throne. It's not there at the moment but it should be starting Saturday night, to my knowledge.

Testimony from R.

I continue to be burdened regarding the need for corporate prayer, but have had difficulty finding people who are interested in praying for more than personal prayer needs and for the sick. I truly don’t sense a burden for the condition of the Church from most Christians I am around, and the few that do are bogged down with things that take their time and attention (sometimes that describes me, too).

Several themes from John Franklin’s talks last November have influenced my praying this year. The first is the pattern throughout the Old Testament of God’s people committing spiritual adultery—of going through the motions of worshipping God, but wanting to be just like the world. God brings cycles of judgment for the purpose of turning his people back to him. If the judgment has no lasting effect, then the judgment will increase.

Being reminded of this, I have prayed not only for revival in the Church, but for brokenness, humility, repentance, and for an awareness of God’s holiness among Christians. I have started writing down quotes and Scripture passages on brokenness and humility.

The other theme that impacted me is how God acts both in judgment and in restoration for the sake of his Name. Those Scripture passages have leaped out at me this year. Now my petitions to God often include a desire that he be glorified and his Name be honored. I ask the Lord to act for the sake of his Name.

I have spent much time this past year in Isaiah and in the major prophets who lived in the time preceding and during the Babylonian Exile (Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel). It’s surprising how relevant they are to our time. I am watching and praying as our nation’s economic crisis and political process unfolds. God will use them for his purposes and for his glory. Let’s be ready to help both believers and unbelievers recognize their need to depend upon Christ.

A few days ago, I read through Psalm 79 and 80. They remind us of our spiritual neediness and of our need for revival and restoration. “Help us, O God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake.” (Ps. 79:9)

Prayer Call Notes (9/30)

It's a thrill to hear the prayers of God's people. Last night was no exception. Thank you, Lord, for burdening us with Your heart. Here are some notes--things that stood out, areas of agreement, themes, etc. Of course, this is only what I (Tracy) saw/heard, and if you would like to add, either comment here or send an e-mail.

Tracy read part of Psalm 51. As we become more and more aware of our sin Psalm 51 is such a comfort. vv 16-18. For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem.

Jean read from Ps 27--One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD And to meditate in His temple.

Draw...more on drawing near to God. (Consistent theme for a few weeks.)

Wash us in Your word.

Because of sin, our hearts can become dull. Ransack our hearts--New level of cleansing. (A few audibly agreed and prayed on this notion of "ransacking our hearts".) Theme of our hearts, exposing what was in them was common theme.

Forgive us for going without Your manifest presence.

Empty us out. Let us have the mind of Christ. (Phil 2:2-11 read)

"As long as it is called 'Today' ".

Help us to love one another, get outside ourselves, look beyond physical situation.

Tongue: much on tongue. Spirit, convict us on the use of our tongue. Is 6:6-7. James 3:9-12, Out of the same mouth come both blessing and cursing, and this should not be.

Deeper conviction of sin by Holy Spirit. A conviction that leads to godly sorrow and brings forth fruit.
FRUIT....LOVE. (Again theme of love). Love our neighbor, family, church. Love should be as Christ's love.

Compassion. You desire compassion not sacrifice.

Help us to be one body, not disjointed parts.

Help us (God's people) to recognize the seriousness of the day.

"Day of Your visitation".

Give us the mind of Christ for election.

Give us a greater revelation of Your holiness. Give your people a greater fear of You.

Mind of Christ, again.

Connie read Jude 1:17-25. I could include it all, but it is long. Coincidentally, I have also been in Jude 1:20-21, in last couple of days. But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life.

Coming Together

Just curious if anyone else our there is terribly burdened that we should be gathering. I know I have been (Tracy), and I know of one other lady. Are you like that as well? I don't necessarily mean that you are gathering with US, but you find it necessary to find people who are like-minded about the condition of church.

I know in my case I am so burdened that we gather, if only by phone, to pray at the same time. The truth is, I desire to know how you are praying, how the Spirit may be leading you. Tuesday Fasts

Pastor Dan Biser sent out an email tonight, inviting us to fast on the Tuesdays leading up to Broken Before the Throne. That's September 16 (tomorrow), 23, 30 and October 7. Should you do this, he asks that you do as the Lord leads you, whether no food/drink all day or just no food. He said some are going for a 24 hour period, from 9 p.m. - 9 p.m. while praying throughout the day for the conference, the leading of the Holy Spirit, and for us to be made ready.

Psalm 24

I want to add to what Connie wrote about Thursday's call. For the past several months, I've started taking notes during corporate prayer. Last November's Wednesday evening session with Henry Blackaby caused me to start doing that. It was then that I truly saw the power of corporate prayer for the first time.

Thursday night was an example of that power. I truly believe that it is God Himself having us focus on Psalm 24. I might have only thought that Psalm 24 was my idea, but as I hear other people talking about Psalm 24 I start to realize it is the Spirit causing us to focus on Psalm 24. He is speaking to us as a group; I believe He wants us to pray that our hearts would be prepared for October. Our hearts, the hearts of other attendees, the hearts of the speakers, etc.

Certainly, we are so familiar with Psalm 24:3-6. "Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart..."
For whatever reason, the rest of the Psalm (:7-10) was sticking out to me. "Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!..."

Before the call I was reading links listed in my Bible and came to Isaiah 62:10. Go through, go through the gates, Clear the way for the people; Build up, build up the highway, Remove the stones, lift up a standard over the peoples.

During the call, another person who was totally unaware of my verse, prayed Isaiah 57:14: And it will be said, "Build up, build up, prepare the way, Remove every obstacle out of the way of My people."

Truly my mouth dropped open. This must surely be God's voice.

Prayer meeting notes from Westview Baptist 9/2

As we gathered together this Tuesday, Pastor Aaron Miller led us to a time of self-reflection using Psalm 139:23-24, and 1 Thes. 4:1-8 and the opened us in prayer. The focal passage for our time together was Psalm 24:3-6. The goal this evening was that God's people assembled at "Broken Before the Throne" will be prepared with "Clean Hands and a pure heart" for the real work ahead.

Some prayer points--

• "Submit therefore to God Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purif your hearts, you doubleminded" James 4:7-8
• Pray that the Lord would expose the sin in our lives and pray that we would be quick to cleanse our hands, repent and purifyour hearts. Psalm 51:1-2
• Pray that we would not be doublminded in any way. Ask God to expose any impurities, deceitfulness of hard-hearedness. Pray "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way." Psalm 139:23-24

We sought God's lead in all we did this evening. We prayed for God's glory--glorify your Name O Lord. Some topics touched in prayer: We settle for so little and pray with little to no faith and work in our own strength. We desire to fufill our lusts vs. God's will. We prayed for hearts to be prepared for the conference -- towards repentance, obedience and encouragement , as well as for salvation of the deceived. We prayed for a return to the fear of God and for revival/awakening.

Prayer was given for speakers of BBtT for a humble and and holy walk and strong in Christ in the face of temptations. Also, submission to one another, presence and power of HS, protection from unrighteousness.

This email has just been received. I have her permission to reprint it here.

My husband and I were at the Broken Before the Throne Prayer Conference last fall and recently received your letter about prayer. We plan to attend the second conference again this fall and are hoping to bring at least a few people from our church with us.

Like you, we are burdened about the spiritual state of our churches and are praying for a fresh awareness of God's holiness and repentance in the lives of Christians.

The Lord has been in a process of bringing me to brokenness over the past five years. A year and a half ago, while reading Henry Blackaby's book Fresh Encounter, the Lord convicted me that I needed to pray for revival in my church and in the leadership of a Bible study that I teach.

A few months later, I read about the plans for the Broken Before the Throne prayer conference in an article on Baptist Press. I knew immediately that we needed to go to this. At the same time, the Lord was convicting my husband of the need to spend more time in the Word and in prayer. God prepared his heart to be receptive to going to WV. We were so glad we did.

Since last fall, we have been seeking to influence a handful of committed Christians in our area of the need for fervent prayer for revival. Our personal prayer lives have deepened, but the corporate prayer we are longing for is slow in coming since the adversary does what he can to keep people distracted.

While we cannot join you in person for prayer prior to the conference since we live too far away, we would love to join you in praying for the upcoming prayer conference by phone when possible and to receive prayer needs by email. I am also checking your blog periodically.

I am so encouraged that God is calling out a remnant to intercede for his people. I cannot help but feel a sense of anticipation for how the Spirit is moving.

I saw a short video clip yesterday that encouraged me. a teenager was walking the halls of his school , eyes forward. A huge crowd was going the opposite direction. he was getting bumped over and over and given dirty looks. This went on for a few minutes as we listened to what this young man was thinking. "I can't do this, this is too hard, what difference am i making, people don't care" He continued moving forward, but was moving more slowly with each passing moment, discouraged and about to give up. Finally, he stopped. he stands there a moment as the crowd continues to jostle him. He looks behind him and sees 6 or 7 others right behind him, following in his path. This young man was forging the way forward, and was unaware that his following God's way vs. the crowds way was impacting others. He turned back around and continued to move forward.

I pray for us to persevere and stand firm in the faith. Jesus loves us so much and will guide us through whatever is in front of us. Oh, thank you Lord Jesus.
May our lives be lived out as a testimony to His love, faithfulness, grace and mercy. By His strength will we stand.

Prayer conference call notes

Tuesday Aug. 5, we had our 1st prayer conference call. When I, Connie, hung up an hour later, I felt such joy in the Lord for having been part of it and with other people that I didn't know. The call began with a brief 5 minute discussion of "Is anyone seeing God stirring the hearts of others around them that are in the body? Hear anyone commenting on the signs of the times?" I remember 1 person's response in particular as she affirmed and expounded on her yes answer.

We quickly turned to prayer, asking God to lead our prayer time for the evening. Tracy had prepared to start us with Psalm 24, unaware of the testimony of D that I just listed on this blog below. During our prayer time, we prayed specifically the prayer requests for the conference (see blog) , but afterwards when reflecting on what we prayed for in addition to this, in a general sense much of it was praying specifically for intercessors. It seems to be the agenda that God gave us for the evening--to raise up intercessors, to purify us, to not follow our own agenda that night or ever, but to be spirit filled and led were a few of our pleas.

Any possible uncomfortableness that i personally might have felt with praying over the phone with people i didn't know, was immediately dispelled. The time flew by. As others were vocalizing the prayers of their heart that were prayers of my heart, well, words can't describe the affirmation, encouragement and peace that flooded my heart. It was like we have known each other always, but if anyone at anytime would like to join the prayer call and sit quietly and not speak, please feel free to do this. Sometimes we just might need to do this. As you listen to what is prayed, your silent agreement will be heard by our Father in heaven.

Our next prayer opportunity will be announced soon. We are seeking to come together in prayer in Martinsburg and to have another prayer call soon.

How D. is led to pray

I'm responding to the 8/1 email regarding the way God has been leading me to pray personally, for CHRISTIANS, and for the country. Last August, God clearly told me to pray for (our) church leadership and congregation to have "clean hands and a pure heart." It was funny because I hadn't even looked at Psalm 24 for about a year!For years, I had been lead to pray that CHRISTIANS (especially) would see their lives from God's perspective, have hearts softened and spiritual eyes open to SEE sin....CALL it sin....and TURN from that sin.Lately, I've been praying to be a "Watchman on the Wall" (Jer. 6:17) if God would choose to us me in that way. I need to learn more about this, but my spiritual interest is peaked! As a continuation of National Day of Prayer, our church has been hosting COMMUNITY PRAYER on Thursdays at Noon. I've been calling participants to personal holiness. I see us as a remnant (who needs to prepare ourselves) in case God might choose to work through us for revival in our area.

My response: Consistantly for a year now I pray regarding our lack of holiness, fear of God and our lack of love for God. There is a sense of urgency to pray in that direction, especially for leaders . More recently, I have been also asking God to enable us to 'truly see' the condition that we, His elect, are in and to genuinly repent. Also, my eyes are being increasingly opened regarding the lack of love we have in the body for each other and the lost.

Exodus 33:15,16 15 Then Moses said to him, "If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16 How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?"

About This Site

This site seeks to unite like-minded* Christians to pray for the holiness of God's people. The Lord is apparently "branding" several of us with 2 Chronicles 7:14. Below is 2 Chr 7:13-14.

If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people, and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

I (Tracy) am located in Maryland. To connect with me, please leave a comment. I believe wholeheartedly that God is bringing together people from all denominations for the sake of intercession. Not just any intercession, not praying for comfort. We desire God's will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. The truth is, it's not only the world rejecting its Creator, so are many of His people. God is merciful, however, and is cleansing us and causing our hearts to return to Him.
